The Abbotsford Heat, of the American Hockey League, play out of the state-of-the-art Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre between October and mid-April, when the playoffs are slated to begin.

The American Hockey League (AHL) is the top developmental league in the world with 87% of NHLers in the 2010-11 season having participated in the AHL at one point in their careers. The Heat is one of only two professional hockey franchises in British Columbia, and is the lone western sibling in the AHL family as the only team located in the Pacific or Mountain Time Zones.

An interesting fact, in September 2011, the Heat became the only professional hockey team in the world to skate on rainwater that is collected in a special filtering system on the roof of the Abbotsford Entertainment & Sports Centre! The AESC is pioneering a new cost effective and environmentally friendly process that translates a steady rainfall during hockey season into ice for the facility. It’s ice from the heavens, one could say!
