BASKETBALL

University College of the Fraser Valley CascadesA sport played by millions throughout the world, basketball provides accessibility and affordability to all athletes. Abbotsford is no exception to this rule, as there are numerous outdoor and indoor courts throughout the city. The University College of the Fraser Valley (UCFV) Cascades women’s basketball team recently made history in August 2006 when they hosted an exhibition game against the US Air Force Academy Falcons, an NCAA Division-1 team. Aspiring basketball players who want to compete at the college and professional ranks start out at the high school level. Abbotsford is a hotbed for local high school basketball talent, as various secondary schools compete annually in the Triple A Boys’ and Girls’ High School Championships, respectively. Abbotsford is looking forward to hosting future basketball events and tournaments.

IN THE NEWS

ATHLETIC PROFILE
Jamie Vaughan

Vaughan returned to UCFV after missing the 2004-05 season with a serious injury to his achilles tendon. Before returning to the line-up on October 7, 2005, the last game Vaughan played was the 2005 CCAA national championship final which UCFV won over St. Thomas University 88-81 behind Vaughan’s 19 points. Vaughan was subsequently named championship MVP. That season Vaughan was also named BCCAA provincial championships all-star and a BCCAA first team all-star.

In his return Vaughan has excelled, being named BCCAA player of the year, BCCAA provincial championship all-star, CCAA national championship all-star, and CCAA All-Canadian. (Vaughan also became just the second player in UCFV history to be named CCAA player of the year). The 6-foot 5-inch forward has been UCFV’s second leading scorer with 15.2 points ppg, and leads the team in rebounds with 7.2 rpg. He is one of just three BCCAA players to rank in the top ten in scoring and rebounds, finishing the season tenth and ninth, respectively. Vaughan has led UCFV in scoring five times and in rebounding five times. He has scored in double figures in 13 of 18 league games, and has recorded three double-doubles. His 16 rebounds in a win over Camosun (1/27/06) set a UCFV season high, a game in which he also scored 24 points. His scoring high of 26 points came against Malaspina (11/11/05). He also netted 28 points in a non-conference game against the CIS’ Trinity Western University (10/08/05).
Vaughan has missed just one game this regular season - a 64-63 loss to UBC-Okanagan (2/17/06) and one of just two blemishes on UCFV’s record - proving just how valuable Vaughan is to the no. 2-ranked Cascades
